number plate size

Hi Laurence,

I faced a similar question during the restoration of my ‘72 Commando.  I tried to find out, without success, what the definitive size in period was.  In the end I mocked up plates of several sizes to see what looked right versus period photos.  I ended up fitting a pressed aluminium plate 9 1/2 x 6 1/2.

My 1976 Commando number plate is 7 1/4" x 6 1/2" and only has two numbers in the registration. 

If you have three numbers in your registration you'll probably need the 9 1/2" x 6 1/2"

so the DVLA, see link above, tells you letter/number size and spacing and margins, so overall plate size is therefore dependent on what the ‘reg.’ is, and age of vehicle!

Wandering slightly off-topic, now that Britain is no longer a member of the EU, riders planning a continental tour will need to display an international vehicle registration code.
