Good Evening, 

I was talking to a friend of mine in Canada last night, and he was telling me of a project that a group of friends were discussing in that a Norton has been fitted with a JAP V twin engine into a 16h frame and because it has come from a Morgan it has been fitted with a Radiator an Inter oil and petrol tank the gearbox is a standard Dolls-head gearbox. 

I have a lot of JAP parts and Norton spares but before i think about kicking the project off, i wanted to see if anybody has undertaken anything like this!

Hi Steve,

   The makers of the J.A.P. engines was J.A. Prestwich of Tottenham, London.

If you use the open type pre-war 16H frame, you will need to do some fairly extensive mods to the front down tube to accommodate the front cylinder. A WD 16H will be even more difficult to convert.The best frame to use would be a full cradle that would take a V-twin with-out having to cut it. Depending on which engine you have will determing how good the project will be as a riding experience. Several people have made these specials using the MT 750cc side valve industrial engine, but this only produces the same power as a Norton Big 4. Even a 1,000cc side valve won't be particularly fast. If you want to make this project a prestige machine, the best components would be an 8/50 1,000cc OHV engine in an Inter rolling chassis. A standard Inter petrol tank does not fit the other garden-gate frames easily.

In the early days of 'Classic  Bike' magazine, there was an article about someone who had put a side valve JAP engine into a 16H frame.  He had named the bike 'Tracor-bility'
