I have been trying to find the right retining screws for the handle bars of a Navigator. I have tried 1/4" and 5/16" BSF and its some thing inbetween. Have looked for 9/32" but no-one sells them. Should I be looking for another thread type say UNF?
I think...

Not UNF
There should be no UNF threads on a Featherbed-framed bike. BSF, BSW, BA and CYCLE are used.
A thread gauge covering Imperial and Metric threads is pretty much essential for anyone working on old bikes. They aren't expensive, but only cover thread pitches, not thread forms.

Handlebar Retaining Cap screws
Both the 7" & 7 3/8" forks (FeatherBed & Navi/Electra) use Part No 19437
The Commando uses Part No 06.0333

Screw size for Navigator handle bar.
Andy
I just checked and see that I have bought the ones you suggest a few weeks ago. They didnt fit. They were too big.
As it was clear, from you all, that the 5/16 should fit I retapped the yolk to find that it was the state of the threads that made me think 5/16 was too big. I just needed to be more confident with the Tap and all now fits.
Thanks Andy and Al for your help it was invaluble.

Read again Lionel
Yes no UNF on my 58 Feather bed, but as I said after Editing I remembered that I had 1970 Commando forks (actually from and S type) and again the screw I had for the bars didn't fit the UNF die until I 'unscrewed' the die, then it is a good fit So Commando forks UNF, Lightweight BSF.

I think it is 5/16 BSF 22tpi certainly the Electra is this. I did think that it would be the same size as the Featherbed but that is 5/16 24TPI thread form (UNF)
Further-Even though I have a 1958 Fbed I forgot it has 1970 Commando forks, hence MY forks are for a 1970 Commando as 5/16 24tpi UNF. But the original question was Lightweight which is 5/16 BSF 22tpi.
