I am in the process of restoring a '71 Roadster. At the moment it has a fibre glass tank which is rotten and the PO had painted the tank and side panels in a disgusting combination of bright blue with yellow splashes.
I have purchased a second hand Interstate tank and seat and am looking at turning the bike into an Interstate. So the big question is what colour should I paint the tank and side panels? The frame is black and the front and rear guards are stainless.
All serious suggestions welcomed

Speaking as a Velocette owner, I say hands off our black-and-gold!
More seriously, I always like the blue-with-white-lining version of the Interstate tank.

Check clearance
Hi Les,
Do be careful when fitting the big interstate tank to the bike to get enough clearance between the newly painted tank and the fork yokes on full lock. Sounds obvious, just don`t ask why I mention it. . .

Stops should be ok
Hi Les,
The stops on the yokes should be ok but be careful to check at full lock. The main issue is getting the correct number of rubber packing washers under the front mounts to get the tank level but without the tank being so high as to contact the top yoke when turning the bars. Might not be such an issue with pre MkIII models if the top yoke is recessed but some of the MkIII top yokes are different without clearance recesses.

Interstate Blue
I agree with Julian. Black and gold is for Velocettes and Vincents - or Sunbeams too if you want to go back far enough.
The large 750 Interstate tank is really slimmed down by the darkish 'Interstate' Blue with the single silver line. Unusual enough these days to be 'different' without being a custom finish.

Which Colour
Les. I'm not sure if this is Interstate Blue as I have only had my 1972 Combat for five years. I normally ride Velocettes, not in the usual black and gold but in willow green just to be different.

Try these
https://www.rsbikepaint.com/en-gb/colours.php#makeid=114&modelid=3915&prodyear=1972
I used these to supply the signal red paint for my roadster.

Water based paint
I bought my paint from RS but the stuff they sent was the water based stuff which I hadn`t used before. You have to get it on perfect first time as you can`t rub it down to put another coat on as it just peels and so is a nightmare. Ask them if they can do your colour in celly if you`re not used to this new stuff and save yourself a load of grief!

If it were mine, I'd go for gloss black with gold logo's.
Those colours look well on mine..
