... you didn't lose out. £20K is a pretty eye watering price.

That the cost to build a bike from spare parts comes to around 3 times what it would cost to buy complete? Ok, I know that is for something standard and not a special, but I'm sure that there would be a similar 'rule'.

As to the price, if someone is willing to pay that,  then it is realistic.  If it stays unsold then it is overpriced.

As a thread remarked the other day, type in 'project '  on Ebay and see what is being asked for damaged non registered non runners.

you might be right george but you cant buy one complete with so many different pieces in a showroom its a special build dont forget there international norton bikes for  30k that cost 500 pounds new you just have to live in the real world

With you Trevor, honestly. I am glad you got a fair price for your bike. As I said, my 'cost from spares comment has to be different for specials as by their very nature they use lots of unique parts as opposed to off the peg items. What or if there is a 'ratio' for a special is an open question.

The term 'value' is one of the things that worries me nowadays.  From what 'value' to put on my own bikes at insurance renewal time on one side to looking at auction results and seeing £8000+ for a 1974 FS1E (£168 new) seems completely insane to me considering what you can get for that sum, but I'm sure the owner of said FS1E considers it good 'value'.

It's all about the definition of a cynic: they know the price of everything and the value of nothing.
