Stuttering bike

Forums

My 500 Dominator is normally a sweet-running bike.  It has suddenly developed a bad stutter, and also loud bangs on the over-run.  I think the issue is magneto rather than carburation.
On pulling off the magneto HT pickups, I found a light film of oil inside, and also that the three carbon brushes seem worn (maybe 1/8" of carbon left on all three).  The bike has done maybe 5000 miles since the magneto was rebuilt.
I used a rag in the front pick-up hole to clean the slip ring (and got an electric shock while gently kicking the bike over) and some brake=-clean on the three brushes.  It ran smoothly for a mile or so and then began stuttering again.
Is the problem likely to be oil inside the mag?  Not sure if it could have got in from minor engine oil leakage or via the oil seal at the drive end.  Where can I get good HT brushes?  I just read that Dave Lindsley retired in 2022 and sold his stock of parts.

I have very similar symptoms on a recently revitalised Commando with Electronic ignition, but no chance to investigate yet, as touring in Normandy. It is almost gone above 50 in top gear.

are often too soft or too hard.  I suspect that the ones fitted during my magneto rebuild were way too soft, and so have quickly worn out.  Too hard, and they cause wear on the slip ring.
