Storing a petrol tank

Hi. I’ve de-rusted the inside of my petrol tank so I’ve a nice bare steel surface now. However, the bike isn’t ready to have the tank fitted yet. I’m trying to work out what the best way is to store the tank to prevent the inside going rusty again. The tank will be stored in an unheated garage. Should I just seal up the filler and tap hole or put a bit of oil into it and swill it around to coat the whole inside surface, or what? I don’t want to store it full of fuel. Any suggestions and ideas gratefully accepted.

Thanks

Why not hang a bag of silica gel inside it? And cover it with a blanket to avoid condensation.

I sometimes wonder if silica gel in a fabric bag could be usefully left in a tea strainer at the mouth of the fuel tanks of all bikes? You'll see it before filling up with petrol (assuming you live somewhere that petrol is still being sold....).

Hi David. Silica gel is a good idea. Not sure where I can get some but I’ll have search on the internet.

50/50 mix white spirits and engine oil.  Couple of pints, swill to coat, drain surplus and air, white spirits will evaporate leaving thin coat of oil

Hi John. Thanks for that suggestion. The white spirit will (I imagine) make it easier to swill the oil around - I was wondering how to make sure that the whole surface got covered.
