Removing an Electra starter

Forums

Has anyone removed the electric starter on an Electra?  Would it be possible to use the primary case and cover from a Navigator rather than keep the original.  I would like to get the bike running first, and maybe then work on the starter as it is it is poor shape.

Thanks much,

Ken,

Take some advice before you get a Navigator inner primary case. I believe you will need a case from the later Navigator, with the later gearbox like Electra. Or else the oil seal behind the clutch will be wrong size.

In your position I would remove the starter motor, it's drive chain and tensioner, and the pawl assembly. Then make a blanking plate to fix over the open hole where the starter motor mounts on the primary case. The bike will run fine.

If you do go the Navigator route, just be mindful you will need to keep the starter ratchet gear on the end of the crankshaft, as it secures the alternator rotor and drive sprocket. And is there enough clearance in a standard primary case for the extended Electra crankshaft and ratchet gear?

Andy Sochanik will be able to advise.

Thank you Peter.  I think I will use the original primary after all.  I think finding the right Nav items would be time consuming and expensive.  Especially here in the States.

As stated above - yes, you can replace the Electra Chaincase (inner & outer) & starter motor, with just the Navi/Jubilee cases - BUT they MUST be from an engine on or after # 106838. Also, you remove the starter gear from the end of the crank and replace it with a chunky washer (from a Jubilee or Navigator) that will keep the rotor in place. Photo attached below shows the washer & stud used on Jub/Navi. Your Electra's bolt should suffice - but you will need the washer.
