Do I need to remove the primary chain case cover in order to take the starter motor out, I have removed the two visible upper motor bolts and the extra long bolt that goes through the primary chain case but it still feels solidly attached . Thank you kind folks.

bolt screw length
The length of the screw is not the issue .If the engaging threads are more than about 5 threads then you risk busting the starter end plate once it bottoms out.

The three bolts, 1 long and two shorter plus the power connections are all that you have to undo. If a starter motor has been in position for some time it can seem stuck but don't be tempted to try and insert a screwdriver and lever it out. Taping with a leather mallet and wiggling is a better idea.
