I have brought a Norton for which the Logbook states: Norton-600cc-Registered 1980-Declared Manufactured 1960.
It has a Slimline featherbed Frame. However, I would expect it to have an Engine No. prefix 14 (99). It has no prefix at all just an Engine No. 89466.
I thought that when the Dominator Twins changed from Dynamo to Alternator they also went to Distributor/coil (except for the SS models). This engine has Alternator/Magneto. It has 9 fins on the barrels (600/650?), and a single carb. NON-Downdraught head.
From reading Roy bacon's "Norton Twins" the only possible engine I can come up with is that fitted to a "Nomad".
I have attempted to attach photos but think they are too big (How do I reduce the size?)
Any help with identifying/dating the engine will be appreciated.
Mick Pond.

Hi Mike My database of reg…
Hi Mike
My database of registrations show that most of the Norton model 99 with engines numbers either plus or minus 100 from 89466 were manfactured in the factory from late summer 1960 onwards.
If your engine is a standard 99 then the number 14 should be stamped on the front left-hand side just in front of 89466. It should also be on the left rear frame gussett just above the swinging arm nut. 1960 engines were also generally still stamped with a 'year identification' letter which for your motor should be the letter 'R'. This should be on thetop left-hand side of thecrankcase, Next to where the small, oval, red Norton badge should be pinned.
On the back of the crankcase near to the breather should be stamped either 99 or 99C or 99SS.
99C means an engine built with Coil ignition. Also in this area should be an engine shop number, such as 1347 meaning the 1347th engine built in that batch of engines.
Contacting the NOC Librarian would be a smart move to help confirm the origin of your Norton and possibly some of its history.
Attached is a photo of what your engine should look like.

IF you give your engine number to the club they can look it up in the factory records and probably tell you the specification it had when it left the factory and which dealer or distributor it was sent to etc..
