I am rebuilding my 1973 Interstate and am looking to find out if anyone has tried fitting a proper oil seal between the adjustment plates where the felt seal is located. Previous experience with Commandos has always been that this felt seal is a source of leaks. As I have new plates to weld in I was wondering if a conventional oil seal could be fitted and the plates then spot welded to hold it in place. If anyone has tried this I would be interested in whether it was successful and which oil seal they used.

Thanks but I actually don't…
Thanks but I actually don't have a problem as the engine has just undergone a full rebuild by Norman White. I am just trying to see if there is a better seal than a bit of felt that anyone has tried before I rebuild the original seal in the chain cases.

Something has to be pushing the oil past the felt seal. In my experience the root cause is a worn engine crankshaft oil seal. I suggest renewing this first before trying other fixes.
