I used rattle can smooth Hammerite on the headlamp brackets of my Jubilee and achieved a really smooth gloss finish but it chipped easily. I decided to use a rattle can clear coat to protect the new paint but to my horror it crinkled before my eyes as soon as the clear coat touched the paint ruining the black paint.
The clear coat, U-POL, is actually very good and gives a tough smooth coating but seems to react with some paints.
Can anyone recommend a black spray paint in a rattle can that won't crinkle when clear coat is applied?

Hello Dennis,
As Dan has already said it is best to use paint and lacquer from the same supplier especially if you are not familiar with different types of paint.
Lacquer (clear coat) is normally used with a BASE coat paint - (usually known as basecoat and lacquer) -it was never intended for use with Hammerite . When you get paint in an aerosol it is normally either cellulose or acrylic so you need to check what you are getting. Aerosol paint is generally a finish in itself and is not intended to be clear coated but if you do it should be flatted down first -then best sprayed with 2K clear coat. Cellulose was wonderful paint back in the sixties but it is well known for reacting with all sorts of things. Acrylic is only a little bit better.
Two pack (2K) is a million times superior but remember it is intended only for professional use - and this means proper breathing equipment etc- as it gives off poisonous fumes. 2K is petrol proof and I have sprayed over Hammerite without getting reaction but I would not like to guarantee that.

Well I used all the same brand of etching primer paint and clearcoat (U-POL) and it worked fine with no crinkling (sp?). However, the finish is not to professional standard so I will get the petrol tank, oil tank and battery box cover painted by professionals.

Iâd Use a paint and clear coat from the same manufacturer. Iâve had similar trouble. Our local factor will supply aerosols filled with cellulose if asked.
