Nut job?

Forums

Slimline petrol tanks are secured to the top of the frame by 2 shouldered bolts that screw into captive (cage) nuts, clipped into brackets welded onto the base of the tank. This arrangement permits a certain amount of "wriggle room" when fitting the tank.
Can anybody point me towards a possible supplier of these nuts? According to RGM's website, the bolts themselves are 18TPI, 5/16" BSW.
I have found plenty of this type of nut on't interweb, but the vast majority seem to be (spit!) metric.
Could a metric nut be "persuaded" with a suitable WW tap to do the job, if so what size would I need?

a nut with right thread must be easy to find, as long as big enough to be reduced in size to fit the location?

Hi,
5/16" UNC is also 18tpi, only 5dec difference in thread angle. For example I believe a lot of the modern supplied casing 1/4" BSW screws are UNC.

Have successfully repaired mine where the captive nut / thread in bracket is too worn by;
1) cut 2 pieces of steel to slide into the brackets welded to the tank underneath 2) with steel piece in the bench vice, drill and tap the metal repair piece 3) glue in place 4) use new special bolts
Hope that helps
