Norton patents

I came across this site via another forum - it allows you to search for patents submitted by different people / companies.

The Norton Motors search brings up some interesting stuff:

The results there are sortable â the earliest one I'm seeing is in the name of James Lansdowne Norton, priority date 1918-06-22! Maybe the current Norton company goes by a different name for patents? IDK ...

There is a 1952 one for an internal deflector within the front mudguard just behind the front tip to catch water being thrown forwards (and thence up into the rider's face) and send it back sideways.

I wonder if it was ever used? Looks like a good trap for cow dung and salt...

And I still don't understand how they had the nerve to patent the oil bath chaincase. Surely it is not and was not then unique, was it?

In 1959 the De Luxe Jubilee claimed to have a deflector on it's front mudguard but a different shape.

Who is the Richard McCandless ? Surely the McCandless brothers were called Rex and Cromie? Was there another one?
