Norton frame number query

Hi. Can anyone please advise me on something...

i am looking to purchase a 1957/8 wideline frame but its stamped on the left side but can only make out 2 digits so its been stamped on the right gusset area but it start 14 and only shows 4 digits going down.. am i right in thinking there should be a 5 digit to give the yr and next question is ...if i did purchase this would i be able to register this frame and get an age related plate...its a model 99 in a sorry state and need of full restoration but i dont want to put all the hard work into it and find out i cant register it later on... i have been told that it was used as a race bike yrs ago and put back so any help would ve appreciated.... also anyone know where i can get a lower chain guard for a 88 dominator deluxe as bikes fully restored but missing this piece.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers Dan.

Thanks for reply thats great, but I'm still worried as it was a race bike so did they grind off last digit so it couldnt be reused on the road (shame) but at some time someone has re stamped it on the right side but still only 4 digits not 5 as both sides have holes drilled through the gusset area, right on that digit...

Oh well the search goes on.

Thanks again.

So so long as the club can date it, you should be ok. I think you need to speak to the dating officer.

The frame code 14 means it's a 600. There should be a letter code before it, such as K which would mean it's a 1955 frame. I'm not sure when the last 600 was made, but few would be after 1960, so it will be tax and MOT free.

I imported my bike from abroad, and provided the registration documents, so there was no question that it is a genuine original bike, unmolested. When I registered my bike in the UK, there was already a Norton with the same frame number as mine - ????? So it was registered with a 0 before the actual number. The point is that when there is a genuine anomaly, they can find a way round it

hello the gusset plate numbers do not give you the date of build but the top edge of the top lug next to the headstock dose in very small numbers or letter stamps marks you may need to scrape off some paintwork yours anna j

My frame is numbered K 122 horizontally at the top of the left frame gusset above the fork pivot. The bike's number is vertically below the year / model code. Nothing on the headstock at all. It's easily visible without removing paint from the frame

I was told in the dim distant past, unscrupulous people, (often Motorcyclist and non-motorcyclists of ill repute), used to visit Museums, copy down the frame numbers and stamp up frames on other stuff for road bike use, believing that Museum pieces would never see the road again!

So now you know where some duplicity crept in!

Cheers
