Just read an article in the Roadholder page 6 November by Tony Hopwood.
I have a Norton 650ss 1963 and for the same reason cannot start it. Please someone tell me if the Commando kick start will allow me to get over the compression as at the moment I can stand on the kick start lever without turning the engine over until I "bounce on it ". Even then the engine turns over so slowly the bike will not start. After 3 attempts I have lost all my strength and still no starting. My son who is much fitter and heavier than I am has less trouble and the bike starts for him after about three kicks. Once started it rides well.
I understand longer levers are available but I would rather go for one that has proven to work.
Please please someone give advice.

Thank you Dan for your advice. I suppose this will allow me to start the movement of the lever whilst piston is at tdc. which I take it to understand that the resistance to start the movement will be at it lowest and give me a good swing before meeting compression. If I have understood you wrongly please let me know.

Norton 650ss starting problem
Wet sumping will make it very difficult to get good momentum on the kickstart. Try emptying the sump before trying to start. Some engines can wet sump within a week of not being used.

Not sure if getting it over compression is the issue but if it is try putting it in second and roll it backwards until it stops due to the compression, without moving it, put it neutral and then kick it, by going backwards you will be taking it to just after tdc.
