Finally putting my gearbox backtogether - new bearings etc. Testing the assembly with the gearbox asembled, all gears engage and run freely (even spin to some extent) with the exception of top gear, this engages correctly but does not spin, it turns ok but there is more resistance than to any other gear. I have not put the clutch etc on the drive side yet, testing with the cog and spider temporaraly assembled. Is this normal or something fammiliar to anyone. I never saw this bike running so do not know what "normal" is.
Thanks
Andrew

Thought it seemed odd, oil is 20/50 squirt from a can, not even got its cover on yet. I wondered if the layshaft (fixed with loctite bush goo and a pin) might be misalligned putting the two shafts out of parallel, only way to fix that would be to remove it, clean it and reposition and assemble when goo is wet.

Having seen some pretty shot layshaft bushes with working gearboxes I doubt (hope ) it isnât that, as Iâve done the same thing! Did you peg your bush as well?
Iâm not sure if it would have the effect you are experiencing but did you shim the layshaft? Or was the top hat part of the bush more proud than the original? ... although a loose layshaft usually results in jumping out of first, I donât know what a tight layshaft would result in.
