Hello, Can anyone explain to me how to remove the rear brake drum from the wheel? It must come off but for now I cannot see a way.

Hello there,

As far as I know the brake drum is an integral part of the wheel hub and is not intended to be removed. You really need to speak to a wheel building expert.

Why would you want to remove the brake drum?

Maybe someone else knows better.

Thank you Patrick for your reply. I did have what, I thought, three reasons :- if the drum needed skimming, how to get the spokes out, cleaning the paint off the face of the cotton reel.

I have looked more closely and all three operations can be done.

Hello Keith,

Yes you can remove the spokes/polish the hub and respoke the wheel quite easily without touching the brake drum. I was always told to respoke the wheel first and then skim the brake drum. You just need a big enough lathe-industrial sized. If you skim the drum first the actual respoking can pull it out of true. To remove the spokes use a bolt cropper-don't try to unscrew them unless you are a glutton for punishment !!.
