Monobloc float level

When I got my Model 50 the carb was flooding. So thought it was a simple float needle problem. Now I find that even with a new needle the float rises as far as the tickler plunger and does not cut off(visual check only but clearly needle is not closing). After much head scratching and changes of fibre washer under the float valve housing i have found the only solution is to leave the washer out(as shown). This seems to restore the correct float level. My question is - were monoblocs ever supplied without the fibre washer? Or am I missing something!

Supplementary question - you can see a hole behind the carb and between oil tank and battery box. Is this correct for a '61 single? Seems more likely to be for a single carb twin?

Old monos are not supposed to have the washer, also 20 thou turned off the face of the needle body is often the cure for rich running. Are you missing the brass spacer tube on the float pivot . The brass needle is a bit heavier than the orriginal plastic needle too. Ally viton tipped needles are good. The hole is for an optional carb adaptor and hose into an air filter box. You would be well advised to fit a phenol spacer between carb and manifold to avoid heat soak with todays fuel.

Also, carefully lift the float up till you feel the needle has enough pressure to stop the fuel flow, then check the clearance of the float to the uppermost cover screw internal boss. A modernaluminium Viton tipped needle is the way to go.I once had a float that would rest against this boss, preventing the needle to fully close hard enough to stop the flow completely. The correct fuel level is up to the small dimple under AmaL on the float cover. Check this by removing the idle jet cover nut, pusha length of clear hose hard upwards over theprotruding jet, run theother endup the side of cover and turn on the petrol. The fuel will rise in tube to the level within the float chamber, machine vertical......AND, No smoking.

Check that the float is not catching on the float bowl screw boss in the 7 O'Clock position...This can happen, especially with the newer plastic floats.....Remedy is to simply file away the contact position on the screw boss....takes seconds.
