Can anyone explain the numbers stamped on the rear of the crankcase? Just around from where the engine number is. It begins with the letter 'T'. Here is a picture

The letter 'T' idedentifies the bike as a twin cylinder Norton. The number is the Shop Number informing how many engines have been built up to that date.
The Shop Number can also be used to date the bike. The NOC Records people could help with that..The numbers on the crankcase left side will also help to ID the actual model.
The shop number puts this engine in the range of a late 1953 Model 7 or even a Model 88.
12 informs that it is a Model 7 whereas 12.2 or just 122 makes it a Model 88.

I would like to what the engine number was, because it's been partially rubbed off! You can see faint numbers and J12 like you said.
How do I go about finding that out, who do I need to be in touch with?

As Phil has advised the engine number can be found from your T number.
Contact the Club Twin Dating Officer ( details in Road holder)
Best guess would be a low 54,000 number.
My Model 88 has an engine number : J122- 53931 and T 11681. Despatch date was 20-10-1953.

It looks like an engine shop number. Probably the production run number from that engine shop.The actual engine number of the bike is on the left-hand side of the crankcase above the primary chaincase. There will be date letter and the number 12 which is the prefix for the number of 5 digits, on the curved part under the barrel . Cheers, Howard
