I am trying to set the timing on my bike. It is fitted with manual advance/retard and a plain drive sprocket on the magneto. See attache photo. Having got the nut off the sprocket I am unsure how to release the sprocket from its taper. Any help gratefully received.

Thanks for the suggestion. I cobbled together something along the lines of your idea and the sprocket flew off. Not having a tap I used a bolt with a nut to push against the taper.

Well done Jon, don’t forget to label your puller and hang it up, you may need it again.

Hi Jon,
mine is self extracting but looking at your photo I would make a simple puller. Drill and tap a central hole in a piece of flat bar about 30mm x 15mm and a clearance hole each side of it at the same centres and diameter as the tap holes in the sprocket. Fasten the bar to the sprocket then screw a bolt through the centre to pull it off. Tighten the bolt gently so as not to distort the sprocket, if it doesn’t extract tap the end of the centre bolt to shock it. If that doesn’t work try heating the outside of the sprocket gently to expand it without the shaft expanding. If you need to heat it I would take the chain off first. I like your timing marks.
