Lucas high ouput alternator

Hoping to find some support so I can force Lucas to pick up that their H.O. alternarors don't fit Commandos without quite severe modification. Whilst rebuilding my 1969 Commando I decided to upgrade to a Lucas three phase 180w high output alternator to cope with better lights, heated gloves etc. When I got to fitting the stator I found that the diameter of the indents in the green resin insulation was too small to fit over the mounting pilars at the back and too small for the nuts and washers on the front. Although my nuts are definately original, I've noted that 'reduced' size nuts are offered by parts suppliers and mine are full size. However, even with the reduced size nuts, the washers won't fit and anyway there is no way to fit a socket or box spanner and definately not a ring spanner, so at the end of the day I cannot tighten the stator up. I've also found that the mounting holes for the studs is such an exact fit that its going to be very difficult to do any alighnment if I ever do get to tightening it up. My supplier replied but doesn't seem over keen to jump in and help and Lucas have not replied to my enquiries either from the classic motorcycle, or the main department. Did anyone else have this problem or have i got a badly made one?

Don't know about yours but my original 850 stator definitely had reduced size nuts (and as far as I remember washers). It did need a very thin walled socket / ring to get in.

Graham.....Attachment shows what your alternator should look like. The amount of resin covering the coils does tend to vary depending on the source of the item. I had a similar problem with overspill on my replacement Stator and just resorted to carefully milling away the bits that got in the way.

I also found the beast was a very tight fit on the mounting studs with more blobs of resin messing up the clearance between Rotor and Stator. I ran a rotary flap wheel down the inside of the Stator to remove the excess. Surpisingly, when back mounted on the carrier, the clearance was an acceptable 8 to 10 thou.

Just came across this post having removed the primary cover from my Mark 3 to see why I was no longer getting an output. For reason or reasons I haven't worked out my rotor has destroyed the inside of my stator, can't see why it lost it's clearance all of a sudden. Seem to recall mine was secured by 2 small nuts and washers and 1 standard. Paul.

Thanks for the measurements, thats really helpful. Are they yours or are they from the manufacturer? Mine is much tighter than the one in your diagram.

I too milled mine down as much as i dared but it's still a really uncomfortable fit. I ordered the reduced size nuts but havent had time to finish the job off yet. There's still some more milling to do for sure, but I don't feel confident enough to take off much more of the resin.

I'm going to try to get Lucas to exchange it for one that it better made. Now I have already ground it a bit I am not expecting too much support from them. Up till now they havent even responded to my emails even beofre I ask for exchange. Not a very good for a company of their size .

Thanks Ian. I'm going to have another shot at it with reduced size nuts. Its still not going to be easy though. Not good for such an expensive part, especially when it involves changing so much other equipment as well. You can't just resort back to the standard alternator .

Is Lucas still really Lucas???

In recent years the trend has been for JUNK companies to buy up the rights to certain manufacturing names. The result being some very dodgy gear being sold under what used to be trustworthy UK titles. For example, Hepolite Pistons and Renolds Chains do not appear to be any longer, the quality items produced in the 60s and 70s. I recently purchased a set of remanufactured Smiths magnetic clocks together with a new rev counter drive gearbox and cable. Total cost approaching £500. The speedo has failed twice and the gearbox loses more oil than a hole in the crankcase. Who said that you have to pay more to get quality?

As we all know, Lucas=Wassell these days. Another example of an old established name being bought up is Villiers now selling Chinese made generators. Oh, it has happened to a couple of bike manufacturers too. Did someone mention Triumph or Norton?

There was a recent rumour that Wassell had jumped into bed with EAW. Though it may be the other way round.

Royal Enfield is Indian based but everyone accepts this and the quality of their bikes. My local motorcycle sales room has new Indian and Brough Superior bikes on view. I have no idea where they are made.

Another has AJS bikes which, I understand,now equals Chinese. Surely it can't be long before a Chinese Bantam arrives on the market.

Never seen this posted anywhere before about aftermarket stators....

I just found that my 2 aftermarket 180W 3 phase are 74mm ID.

These are 3 mount hole not 6 like original, and have green potting. Also they have a few extra laminations in the core and are thicker than the 120w items.

While all my genuine old lucas are 75mm ID.

In the past I found it very difficult to get adequate rotor/stator clearance with these aftermarket items...now I know why...

I don't care who makes them, they will now always get measured and for sure will get opened up on a lathe to 75mm.

Phils drawing matches a normal single phase 180W unit, like my single phase MKIII unit core is 15.5mm wide. The lead comes out of the 6th hole leaving 5 clear holes.

My aftermarket 3 phase unit is 16mm wide and otherwise different lead position from the 3 bolt hole circle. To bad there is no armature ID shown for a 47244.

Wassel / Lucas will not support any claim where you are using a part that was never designed for the model - the 3 phase stators will not fit mk3's and I asked the question and got brushed aside but what seems a valid answer to me.
