locating seat mounting prongs

Forums

Hello, I have a featherbed frame (1965 650SS) project that I'm building. At some point someone removed most of the mounting tabs. I was able to replace (weld) the battery box, oil tank and tool box tabs, but need help on the positioning of the seat front mounting prongs that protrude from the cross bar toward the back of the bike. The bike came with a nice cafe seat and tank but I would like to replace the prongs just so that they are there for a possible future stock seat. I would appreciate if anyone could help with the following dimensions: What is the spacing point to point of the prongs? Are they level with the top of the frame rails or how far below? How long are they? What size round stock (1/4 - 3/8) ? Looking at pictures I can see they that they have a bend that I can probably estimate. Thanks in advance, TY

Hi Tyrone,

The pictures below are of my 650's seat pins.

Hope that this helps you. The pins are nominally 5/16" diameter, tapering down to around 3/16" at the end where they enter the seat bushes. They are welded (as far as I can tell) on the centreline of the cross tube pointing upwards, and after around 3/8"bend such that the top face of the pins run in line with the top of the subframe tubes. The pins are around 1 3/8" long.

If you need any more info, let me know.

Regards,

George.

Thank You so much for photos and information. I'm new to featherbeds. I've been riding the same Commando since 1979 so I'm familiar with Nortons. This 650 came in several boxes of parts, some I don't recognize, but I'm really enjoying this project. Thanks again.

Ty
