Hi all,
Just had my heads & cases all cleaned, now found what looks like cracking in the barrel liners. Anyone know if they can be replaced or repaired?
thanks
Ouch! I’d say that has been…

I had mine re-sleeved.
I had mine re-sleeved by Meridian Engine Services in Cambridge. I supplied my own sleeves (liner) courtesy of NOC shop but Meridian said they could supply them. They did a fine job at a reasonable price.
Home Page (meridianengineservices.co.uk)
Given that Jubilee pistons are as rare as hens teeth you might want to re-sleeve the barrel and bore to the size of your piston if it is in good condition.

Thanks guys, yep I believe…
Thanks guys, yep I believe the engine seized a little while before it was retired - 45yrs ago! But I’m told it was running quite happily before!
it’s currently standard bore - no oversize
no liners in NOC shop at the mo, only a LH barrel, unfortunately this is the RH barrel! Will speak to meridian and see what they say.
thanks again

Jubilee Barrels
Hi Kieren,
The barrels may look like they have liners - BUT THEY DO NOT.
I cannot imagine how yours got damaged.
It looks like you may need to find another barrel, or have a liner fitted to yours.
Depends on size, & if other side is damaged. Do not run with odd sized pistons (I have seen it done) - keep both pistons the same.
Left & right barrels are slightly different - but can be made to fit either way round, if it helps.

Fitting LH barrel to RH position
Hi Andy,
Thanks again for your info, much appreciated.
Do you know what needs doing to fit a LH barrel to the RH side?
I’m thinking it’ll probably easier and cheaper to do that rather than getting my existing one bored & lined.
Thanks

Pah! Back in the day my 40 tho over piston cracked, and the barrel was scored but I could only get one 60 tho oversize piston so fitted that. While I wouldn’t recommend it the jub ran fine for the rest of its life!

Hi Andy, Thanks for the…
Hi Andy,
Thanks for the info, I wasn’t sure if there would be much I could do.
I’ll keep an eye out for a suitable replacement barrel.
The engine did suffer a seizure a year or two before it was parked up, I believe a con rod was bent at the same time, so the damage was possibly done then. Ran well after it was repaired apparently!

There are barrels and conrods for sale on ebay....
Kieren,
There are barrels and conrods for sale on ebay at the moment.
Despite what Andy says, I bought a barrel and two liners from NOC shop and had them fitted at Meridian because I also bought a pair of standard size pistons also from NOC (when they stocked them!). I don't doubt that the barrels had no liner originally but Meridian did fit my liners and bored/honed them to fit the new pistons so it is possible.

Hi Dennis,
Yep I’m keeping my eye out, all in a worse condition than mine, so far!
Will speak to Meridian about what they may be able to do.
thanks again

The only difference between…
The only difference between the barrels as I recall I’d that the RH barrel has its fins trimmed a little to clear the timing case.
I did it a while ago and my memory is a bit foggy but it was very straight forward esp as you have a barrel as a template.

Great, thanks Dan.
They have a NOS barrel in the NOC shop, so I think I’ll get that.

For Michael.
Hi Michael, I too thought that and if that is the extent of the damage I agree with you. However, (and hopefully Kieran might confirm), it looks like the crack runs down and then around the bore? If this is the case, then even a liner might be risky as there may not be enough support or good enough interference fit possible to get good heat transfer. If the crack is as I think it is, then the respondents who say its new barrel time are, to me, right.
Regards, George.

Barrel Cracks - update
Hi all,
Thanks for all the suggestions on this problem.
Meridian have told me they can line the barrel for £130, but in the meantime I have done a dye penetrant test on the barrel with the only crack being the smaller one at the top, see image.
I’m going to speak to meridian again about getting the barrel welded & bored like you mentioned.
Thanks again

Replacement Barrels
@Simon - thanks for letting me know you have some barrels, do you know if they’re standard or oversize?
Thanks

Thanks Kieran.
A repair as Michael suggests should be quite an easy repair for them to do, and hopefully at a lot less cost for you. Just make sure the outside of the spigot is dressed back too.
Regards, George.

Ouch! I’d say that has been hit or dropped sometime in its past, never seen a crack like that.
What bore is the barrel on? A secondhand one might be an easier bet?
