Ignition System

Forums

Can someone please tell me if a 1957 Norton Dominator 99 has a magneto ignition system or coil ignition?

According to Roy Bacon Norton twin restoration, coil ignition was first used in 1958.

Same year that the dynamo was replaced with an alternator. Some models had magneto after that. Coil ignition was never used with dynamo.

My 1957 Dominator 99 is magneto, I purchased it in 1962 so the chances are it is original.

I found below hiding within the revised Dominator Service Notes. It should provide a starting point for answering Roger's question. ie. when alternator ignition first arrived on the Model 88 and 99s.

  75354 – 1957 Alternator Power (Lucas RM15) + Coil Ignition (Lucas 18D-2)

However, there are several other points to note.

1)  There were several bundles of Dynamo Model 77 before this number and after.

2) The Model 77 of this era kept its dynamo right up to the end of production.

3)  The French Police loved Nortons with Dynamo generators and bought heaps of these to special order until the end of 1959.
