Hello,
I'm restoring a 650ss which I bought many years ago but only recently got round to doing it. The seller told me that the engine was as standard with the exception of the oil pump which had been upgraded. However, there are no markings on it whatsoever. I can see now that I've got it stripped down that this engine is going to cause me some major headaches which will be the subject of future posts but for now it would help if I knew what pump I have here. Can anyone tell me how to identify one pump from another?
Hello Philip, Thankyou very…
Hello Philip,
Thankyou very much for posting those attachments. It answers all my questions because not only does it tell me that my 650SS runs a six start oil pump but that the introduction of the six start in 1966 was coupled with enlarging the oil ways on the feed side in the 650 crankcase. My engine has 88SS crankcases which although the same in all other respects as the 650ss would not have the enlarged oilways unless the installer of the six start pump modified the oilways (I'm assumed that swapping the earlier three start for a six start is what the seller meant by an upgrade). I'm not even sure if this can be done if not modified. My cases are currently with Pat at Seager engineering for some other remedial work and we'll discuss this together when I see him next. I've now got an idea of the history of the oiling system and all will be taken into account such as high or low pressure feed to the rockers, scrolled or not scrolled rocker spindles, oilways in the conrods etc etc. We'll work something out.
Thanks again for your help.
Regards,
Gary

Great document…
...on a much discussed subject. Can they be placed in our technical documents tab?
Many thanks

Info Available
Hi Jonathan......Those oil pump notes have been posted many times in the Heavy Twins Technical Section. They can also be found in Roadholder 185 & 191. Checkout the Roadholder Library as found in links above.

Found them in the RH index
Thanks for that. Couldn't find them in the heavy twins tech section or the compendium. But the RH index reference was successful.
Thank you
Jon
