Hello All,
I took the primary drive off (noticing that Nortons--or at least this one--have two nuts holding the clutch on--before too much weight went on sprocket puller)--and can see what has been going on. It the chain has been occasionally engaging with the stainless steel hexagon headed countersunk screw that forms part of the set holding the chaincase on. It is new and does not seem to fit the countersing well--IE stands up too high.
I doubt this can have affected my gear woes however.
Cheers for all suggestions

I thought it might be that, mine were properly countersunk but the clearance is tight, I now have a new primary chain and have it adjusted properly!
PS what do you mean two nuts? there is usually only one in thecentre which is revealed whenyou remove the pressure plate?

Hello Dan,
Your suggestion was almost spot on--I had forgotten that the inner cover bolts opn. I am assuming the old screws fitted to the countersink better. It will not take long to make the countersink deeper--I wonder what I did with the old screws.
My clutch is retained by too thinish nuts--one thicker than the other (and old way of locking nuts)--but it has by the looks of things led an 'interesting life' in the past.
Cheers

So did mine, it has an oak primary chain tensioner block!
The normal arrangement is a large nut with a spring washer, I add a generous blob of loctite!
Tightening or loosening a lock nut in the clutch recess must be a bit of a challenge!

John, the NOC shop sells the correct clutch centre retaining nut for the earlier gearbox (040373) and later gearbox (24570) - if my memory serves me right they are both a reduced size hexagon to fit in the narrow hole in the centre of the clutch body. I think you will need a thin socket or box spanner to fit it - the one in the Whitworth socket set I bought from the shop fits perfectly. I hope that helps, good luck, sounds like you are getting there!
