Oops. Should have noted the horn push button also combines the dip and main beam switch. George

Stand down guys. By a mixture of poring over the wiring diagram and trial and error it is now obvious that the washer goes between the switch unit and the handlebar. I was trying to detect a short which prevented the main/dip to work. It was doubly difficult to track as the there was also a dodgy connection at the new (!) sealed beam unit. All sorted. George
