Has anyone had the side stand spring fall/break off.

Forums

My side stand has now fallen off twice and consider myself lucky not to have been hurt. After the first spring failed I fitted a stainless steel one and made sure the spring wasn't hitting the stand bolt. I can't see any obvious reasons why the spring should fail. Any ideas. Regards Peter

Are they breaking or becoming detached ? I regard them as a maintenance item as they do wear on the hooks, even if regularly given a smear of grease.

As ever, a photo would be useful...has the stand been modified ? The spring lug can touch on left handers.

The second spring had only been on the bike for about 600 miles. The stand hasn't been modified and showed no signs of having rubbed on the side stand bolt. There's no wear on the side stand fixing points.

I had a fairly new stainless steel centre stand spring break on my Dominator many years ago.
I purchased a replacement but on examination I found a score mark close to the end of the coil as it then twists in the other direction to the hook.  I decided not to fit any more stainless springs after that.

I had one fall off 2000 miles after fitting it , in 2002,  though can't remember if it was new. I was in Northern Norway, going north, so cable ties kept stand out if the way till earlier this year, when I got bike out of hibernation for D day week in Normandy and fitted a new spring, making sure it wasn't catching on anything as it operated. We shall see how it goes, though it may take some time.....

I won't be refitting the side stand until and if I can find a way to stop the stand from coming right out if the spring breaks/fails for a third time.

I've had the side stand spring become detached three times. First time was back in 1984, hard cornering two up  at the Britti rally in Finland. Second time near Helmsley two up again and the last a couple of weeks ago when going down a very rocky road in the IOM. The spring didn't break just got detached. Cured by using a tie wrap on the stand near to the attachment point, to keep the spring in place, and by avoiding contact with the ground!

Surely stainless steel isn't a good material for a spring with demands and efforts like a stand spring anyway.  Ebay may not be a great source for a well made spring that is made from the correct material either as you could well be inadvertanly buying a cheaply made product. Better to approach a specialist manufacturer, or a supplier with well known standards for something like that.

.. stainless probably doesn't have the required properties for a spring unless specifically chosen. If all else fails there are still companies - especially in Redditch - who will still make a spring to specification.

I had one break in France last year and had to tie it with a bungie which was a pain as that bike has no centre stand. Sometimes you can have wear on the frame tube hole where the spring attaches and if you drill a hole slightly further away on this tube it will keep the stand tension tighter. I would not recommend a stainless spring.
