The Atlas has been resting on its side stand for a few weeks , a good pool of oil has appeared. Its normally parked on the centerstand and had no problem. Its been over 20 years since I got that far into a box , Dont remember there being much of a seal, Whats the likely culprit, worn sleeve gear bushes ?.

The quad ring conversion to the gear lever seal is cheap and simple and.works well for me. If that's the leak.

Hi David , That would be a result ,an hours work at most. Sadly its the other end ,which is a major job If I remember, all the primary side off and a full box strip to do the bushes . Simpler to take off the prop stand !. Or even better swop the bike with the big bevel in the sons garage and give him an oily floor. Sorted. After yesterdays long ride to Henfold and the Plough (a very nice ride ) I fell asleep on the Soffa and son said I sounded like Darth Vader, Justice is served.

I've never understood how the other end seals. As far as I know there is so way the sleeve gear is sealed against the main shaft, nor is there a lip seal. Maybe someone can explain? Does it just rely on the shafts main shaft being above the oil level most of the time? Is oil only held in by the bushes? There should be one of those slightly elusive felt seals to keep the worst of it in. Someone recently did post a section drawing I believe. This reminds be to buy some puppy training mats - (NOT the expensive gel ones!) - cheap plastic backed paper ones from the Pound Shop. Every Norton needs them.
I missed all the events yesterday - unfortunately. They were piled high all of a sudden and we were spoiled for choice...

There is a seal as Mikael details , probably the orriginal 1967 one. But the Atlas had a hard life before we got it so I expect the Bushes are well worn.

Best thing is to first make sure where the oil leak comes from. Oil have a tendency to go around before finally end up on the floor. Thorough cleaning and flour on the suspected area. Correct oil level. Then rest it on the side stand and check daily.
First I would suspect an overfilled gearbox.. Maybe a loose gearbox sprocket. Then the 04.0132 OIL SEAL - SLEEVE GEAR BEARING. Maybe combined with worn bushes.
