Just picked up an original front mudguard at Kempton Park. It still has the original "blade" number plate. Are these actually illegal now, on account of slicing errant pedestrians?
Just did a quick Google…
Just did a quick Google. After September 2001, only a rear plate is permissible (on a bike), prior to this a front plate is permitted, but is not actually required.
Have yet to find chapter and verse on this though.

Mount it across the bottom…
Mount it across the bottom yoke, like they often were in the sixties, safer and more unusual nowadays .

Among the pile of bits that…
Among the pile of bits that I laughingly refer to as my Electra project, the 2 fork covers screwed on below the bottom yoke each had a couple of holes and brackets fitted to hang the numberplate from, across the forks.TBH was (fairly) neatly done- but I've already filled the holes and repainted the covers...

Why oh Why?
Why oh Why didn't any one (apart from me...) hang the front number plate on the side between the front mud guard stay and the mudguard bridge between the forks? Yes you need two plates but safe.

I've read (and I'm not sure where now) that they were not actually banned and if displaying the registration number of the vehicle, they remain legal.
However, if the registration number is not shown, it becomes a dangerous accessory and isn't permitted.
It's probably only a problem if you actually split someone's difference with it. It could mean a complainant with a high pitched voice in the witness box.
