My 1964 650SS, which I bought in 1966, is just nearing completion of its restoration.
The 59-year-old twin monoblocs leak from everywhere except the float chamber.
I am wondering if there is a suitable replacement material for the various fibre washers that no longer keep the fuel where it's supposed to be.
Would it be possible or advisable to use, for example, Viton o-rings instead?
And would the ethanol in the fuel be a problem with that type of fluoroelastomer?
Any advice or comments from the experienced people would be very welcome.
Many thanks from New Zealand.

My 60 year old monos dont leak. As Ian says all fibre washers are not the same. It usually takes several sessions tightening up before they settle. Time spent flattening surfaces is well spent. Gen Amal washers will fit tighter and last .

Thank you Ian and Robert. …
Thank you Ian and Robert.
That's exactly the advice I need. I will find a supplier of quality fibre washers here in NZ and try them out. Seal Imports in Hamilton might have some. Also will get a lens on the surfaces and see how they look.
Many thanks again.

.. that fibre washers in good condition and from a reputable supplier are fine provided the mating surfaces are clean and sound. However, the ones often sold on ebay or at autojumbles tend to be very hard. If a leak does persist I use a very thin coat of wellseal and let it cure for a day or so before putting any fuel in and that works OK. You can't use O rings as these will just squash out. Dowty washers (with viton inserts) are useful for petrol tap unions and the like.
