Before I butcher anything, is there any secrets to changing the barrel on a headstock lock without the key available? From above and below there seems to be no way in. It looks like there is a lightweight metal cover over the keyway on top,(to keep the weather out?) but the underside is blank. All I can see is the stub end of the shoot-bolt flush with the casting. Bike came with no key for it, but needs a bit of basic security. Thanks in advance.
Bike is a 1968 Atlas, slimline, obviously.

Don't forget to remove the small screw on the underside of the headstock which holds the lock in place otherwise the lock will be difficult to remove and a small part of the underneath of the headstock will break out.

Thanks for this and other comment. Much appreciated, and will dig deeper now, with more knowledge and care.

Hi, Neil.
On my 1966 650SS the steering lock is simply an interference fit in the top yoke and fits from above. You should be able to drift it out from below, though this could be difficult with the forks assembled. I accessed mine when the top yoke was off. It's actually not too big a job to remove just the top yoke so that's probably the best way to tackle it. It's years since mine was out so I can't remember but it might even have a key number on the barrel to enable you to get a replacement.
Good luck with sorting.
