Today I added this. It takes the edge off the noise but I've yet to find out what it does to the performance. My neighbour asked why I bothered...it's not as if I get up at dawn every day...so it might come back off!
Held with 2BA stainless set screws. The 1+5/8" size is a snug fit in the 1+3/4 tail pipe. Screw threads are Araldited. I hope they don't unwind and jam the thing inside the box...
Looks good Dave but I didn't…

I had one once...
I had a 1961 ES2 once, I was blown off by a Ford Cortina-I sold it back to its earlier owner. But while I was cleaning it one day I took the silencer off (Kidney shape). A 1 3/4 exhaust pipe-I though that will make a racket! Lets wake the neighbours up! started it, sounded like a pussy cat! Far more noisy with the 'silencer' on.

Cheakskate, me?
I got some hamster cage 1 cm galvanised square mesh, rolled it round a broom handle and shoved it up the 'silencer'. It tries to unravel, jamming itself securely in place. It's reasonably effective at taking the edge off a noisy exhaust. Now has anyone seen a hamster anywhere?

Looks good Dave but I didn't think the noise was offensive in the least, just sounds like like a proper old single should :)
Beware the araldite, it softens to liquid with heat, but I'm not sure at what temperature.
