Electra ignition coils

Forums

I'm fitting new 12v ignition coils to my Electra. The new coils have terminals + & - instead of SW & CB. As it's positive earth am I right in thinking that the + terminal will connect to the contact breakers? Any advice welcome.

That's my understanding, it will work either way, but may have a weaker spark if it's wired the wrong way around, or at least that's what I was told!

If the coils fail in the future then go 6V on the coils with a ballast resistor, then as you use the starter and the voltage drops the spark will not reduce in strength but then be protected from the 12V once the engine is running. Look at the 72 Commando wiring diagram to see who to do it, that will also show you the wiring for the +/- marked coils.

Ignition coils-yes CB on Wipac means Contact Breaker, and as the bikes are Positive earth then CB goes to the Positive. If reversed no damage is done but spark is weaker. But fitting new coils to an Electra would mean non Wipac in which case the HT would come out the top not the side, hence the fitting under the tank gets a bit messy. As for using the system with 6V coils and a ballast resistor-firstly you need a specific starter solenoid (as used in cars in the 60/70s) is the Electra one up to this? Secondly the problems with the Electra starter I have found have either been mechanical or lack of umph in the battery (Umph is like Gubbins-a technical term!)Much better to fit 6V coils and a Boyer ignition and have a sweeter faster bike.AO
