Can I fit a later Rubber faced timing chain Tension adjuster to my Dommi 88 and has anyone ever come up with an automatic adjuster ?

There has been previous discussion about automatic adjusters on this forum.  Search will turn it up.  There are or were USA versions for Commandos.  No doubt the makers will know if they fit the Dominators.  One design problem is preventing mechanical ones from tightening the chain when the crankcases are cold, so they become over tight when hot because the aluminium expands more than the steel chain.  Similar problem is if the sprockets have any eccentricity. If it goes tight at the slack point, it will be too tight at the tight point.

There is no reason not to fit a rubber faced tensioner,  but you will need to retension the timing chain after around 300_500 miles as the side plates eat slightly into the rubber. Once the rollers of the chain contact the rubber, no more wear really occurs and it can almost be forgotten about unless you plan to do 10000 miles a year on the bike. They are certainly quieter than the all metal ones, and should be kinder to the chain. 

That's my experience anyway.

So where does the rubber bits go?

Alan makes a point - but it begs the question: where do the metal bits go when the side plates of the chain wear into the steel slipper?  It's must surely be a good reason not to renew a well run-in slipper.  And maybe a good reason to fit a magnetic sump plug (do they fit inside the Dommie filter plug?)

Thanks for the input everyone. I actually thought my `well worn ` slipper might be better to keep as the Timing chain would be running on the Rollers as it is although I quite like the idea of `wearing in ` a rubber faced one which may be a `quieter option .
