Dominator side stand

Forums

I am rebuilding my 650SS and want to install a side stand. The original has long gone. Unfortunately in the NOC shop the part is out of stock so I am looking at the offerings from Norvil Spares, Andover Norton and RGM. Has anyone any experience of these products. I cannot find anything on previous forum topics apart from some potential legal issues back in 2018 with ANI regarding ownership of original drawings. I realise that, on some forums, it is not allowed to mention any companies specifically by name so will understand if that is the case here.

Hi Allan. I’ve just fitted an Andover Norton side stand to my 1960 Dommie 99 project. The only real problem I had was that with the stand installed as supplied, the bike leaned over far too much. The ‘cure’ was to put a 1.5mm shim between the mounting block and the engine plate. Doing that has made  the lean angle just right. Luckily, I don’t have the exhaust downpipes or inner chaincase fitted yet so manoeuvring the stand into place along the frame tube was relatively easy. If the inner chaincase was in place, I think it would have been a lot more awkward. Fitting the spring was a bit tricky but a proper spring fitting hook tool simplified the job.

Thanks for your advice. I have heard that problems with the angle of lean are sometimes due to replacement engine plates being used that are made from alloy and thinner than the original part. Was that the case with you? Not used a spring fitting tool before. Are they readily available and would it also be useful for fitting the centre stand spring?

Hi Allan, maybe able to help you out. PM sent.

I think the fitting problems are more likely to be due to the variability of the precision (or lack of precision) in the original welding of the lug to the frame tube.

Allan,

I bought my replacement sidestand over 10yrs ago from RGM and have been delighted with it.  The quality of manufacture was exceptional and came with useful notes regarding fitting.  It comes unpainted so that you can make any adjustments before finishing it with your desired colour.

I'm not aware of sidestand lugs being welded on featherbed frames that David mentions above.

Hi Allan. My engine plates are original steel plates so I assume they are ‘standard’ thickness. Regarding the spring hook tool, the one I’ve got is like the one in the photo below ( photo from eBay). Yes, it was useful in fitting the main spring onto its top fixing point but that’s because I don’t yet have the petrol and oil tanks fitted so I’ve got plenty of space and so can get a good straight upward pull on the spring from directly above the mounting point.

Hi Tony

Thanks for the info re spring hooks and thanks to the others for their comments. I will sort out getting one. Seems better than stretching the spring with loads of washers between the loops. My bike is completely stripped down at the moment so like you I should be able to get good access from above.

Regards

Allan
