Dominator Boyer Bransden problems

Forums

I am getting an intermittent fault with the Boyer electronic ignition

on my Dominator.

Sometimes I get sparks when I turn the ignition off or on and

this can detonate the fuel left in the cylinder.

Sometimes it works with no problems.

I have double-checked the circuitry and am at a complete loss. I tried

taking the two wires which go to the stator plate and tried touching

these/taking them apart.

This produces sparks repeatedly so it seems to me that the coil

circuitry must be good or I wouldn't be getting any sparks at all.

Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

The bike was lying idle for some five years until recently when I

re-commisioned the bike, but this missing sparks problem has

me completely beat.

I would almost guarantee that your problem is a tarnished ignition switch. Or depending on the particular ignition switch your could have loose rivets if you have terminals on the back. But either way investigate the switch.

Sparking when switching off is also normal with Lucas RITA. In fact it's the easiest way to test that it and the plugs are working. As Robert says - nothing to worry about. It should happen with regular old fashioned coil ignition - switching off is what the contact breaker does. RITA (and Boyer) just amplify the result.
