crankcase sump studs

On my Electra parts list there is a "stud for crankcase oil filter", number 24562. In the NOC shop lightweight twins section there is a "stud for sump plate but not MAG/SUMP", number 17399. Does anyone know if these are the same thing?

The Norvil website tells me that 17399 is 1/4" x 1" and the threads are Cycle and Whitworth.

If it helps David, I have just used one of those studs to replace one on my 1964 Navigator.  It is fitted with the club modified alloy sump filter with the magnetic drain plug and it fitted perfectly.   I haven't owned an Electra but everything I have read over the years says apart from the electric start and primary drive side, modifications to that end of the crank and being overbored the Electra engine is identical to the late Navigator and certainly as far as the sump filter (strainer to be honest!) is concerned.   Given how cheap the studs are I would order 4 and give them a try - as for the modified allow sump plate and magnetic drain plug in my exoerience it is a very sensible mod and money well spent.    Cheers Nick

Yes the Electra might be engine wise almost the same as the Navy BUT Navy 6V Electra 12V Front end the same but Electra has Atlas rear wheel/brake. Then of course there are the frame stiffening plates that get in the way, other wise as you say ostensible the same. Oh the Electra should have indicators on its handlebars.

Wise words as always Alan, I've often wondered - does the Electra really need those obstructive stiffening plates?   It must make getting the rocker box covers off near impossible to do the tappets?

 

I think the stiffening plates were necessary on the Electra, because of the extra unladen weight placed on the headstock. Extra battery, and the extra weight of the starter motor gubbins.

At first it was impossible to remove the exhaust rocker caps on an Electra - as the stiffening plates got in the way. But very soon, in production, the factory added a scollop to the profile of the plate, allowing access.

Shows the state that AMC were in when a factory uses bodges like this instead of strengthening the frame properly.
