I’ve been told that the engine to frame numbers of the Commando went out of sequence in 1975 . Is this true, or just a way of selling a no original bike? Thanks Mick.
They were out of sequence…

Norton VIN VS frame #
The long standing commando VIN/SN plate continues the numbering styl adopted with the 20000 series. In 73 the frames started to be stamped with an additional unique frame # to comply with some market jurisdictions..
In IMay of 75 the frame # changed and then incorporated the VIN into the frame stamping. It was from then on the specific government to decide which # to use. Here in the USA with 50 states, which are all different, to have either frame or VIN/SN # used. It does not change what we know to be the "norton VIN/SN".
The accessnorton forum. information is not much help since the chart does not have all the bits of information.

Once I discovered what was happening, I stopped putting a lot of further data.

They were out of sequence for the MK3's past a certain point, but the numbers should still match the despatch records to retain value over a bitsa. A quick email from a NOC member to the dating officer may get a confirmation its a factory matching pair or a mix of 2 bikes. Once bought then pay for the dating cert for later use.
Some examples of the frame and engine numbers, click on the year column and head to the last few pages for 1975.
