Am I right in thinking that featherbed frames were made from Reynolds 531, the tubing used extensively for racing-bicycles, or was that just Manx frames?

Hi There,
The backbone tube for the commando was 14 gauge wall, I don't know about the rest.
The roadster featherbed frames were likely made from mild steel for cost saving and the Reynolds 531 was reserved for the Manx for weight saving and strength. I read that the Manx frames were made out of 17 gauge tubing, though I don't recall where I read that tidbit.
Regards,
Albert

Check out the technical pages of this website. The information is there. The answer would appear to be mild steel. Nothing special that's for sure.
