Has anyone tried a clamp-on type side stand? I have no bracket on the frame for a side stand and reluctant to go to the bother of welding one on (probably mean engine out, etc.). However worried about a clamp-on one damaging the frame or slipping and the bike falling over!
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Mike

Doubt frame tube is strong…
Doubt frame tube is strong enough, only plain mild steel tubing, I got a 72 onwards bracket welded on using a cardboard template downloaded from the Old Britt's website.

Clamp-on side stand
Hi Stan - thanks for your reply. Looks like proper Norton side stand lug is the way to go. Better safe than sorry! Cheers, Mike

If you are having a welder…
If you are having a welder weld the lug on then give him the sidestand and pivot bolt, once he has fitted the lug then he can fit the sidestand and pivot and then he can weld a flat plate onto the frame tube where the rubber bung on the sidestand rests on the frame. That will protect the frame and stop the sidestand disappearing under the frame tube when the pivot wears slightly ;) .

Not a lot of room under the primary drive cover for a clamp and could quite possibly bend the frame if done badly. Side stand needs to attach as near as possible to the frame lower cross tube.
I saw a clamp-on stand many years ago, didn't look too clever. I think I'd go with welding a proper bracket on; should only need the primary covers removed with the bike laid on its side.
