Clutch cable length.

Forums

Hi all,

What is the correct clutch cable length for a Commando with standard european bars? Have been using 51", but is it right?

As long as it doesn't get tight when you swing the forks to full lock right or left then it seems to me to be correct.

Any other input?

Try and use the longest cable that fits, looks OK, as it will enable better radius bends when fitted. Run a spare at the same time.

Worth looking on the venhill website for this kind of info.

Their site says UK bars are 51 inch. USA bars 56 inch.

I used the 51 inch with semi western bars and length was good.

Routing is really important - mine was initially routed through head steady and seemed too short.

I found the following diagram useful.

Thanks Steve, that diagram looks interesting. I have routed mine through the wiring grommet under the seat. The diagram shows it going over the frame loop. I shall have a look at re-routing it tonight, as I cannot go to the pub (sigh).

The reason I asked is because it looked slightly long & it was for Western bars. I did read somewhere that the right length was 48", but A&N & RGM do either 51 or 46".

… that 46" is OK for European bars.

My bike came with annoying Western bars, and the 51" cable was an embarrassment when I swapped to sensible bars.

I have just replaced the lower Interstate bars for the higher semi-western bars just a couple of days ago. All the stock cables were sufficiently long enough to fit with ample clearance. This included the brake hose.

Well, I followed the diagram on Steve's post & it seems very good.

Thanks everyone, worth asking.
