I have been using Morris' classic Golden Film 20/50 in the Navigator's gearbox as recommended by the Norton maintenance manual but a little concerned about how it does tend to whine more than I remember back in the 70s and after a run the oil has frothed up badly. I've just changed the gearbox oil for Castrol Classic EP90 - what a difference, no more whining and no frothing - well worth the expense and i am assured safe to use with our gearbox bushes!
Sadly despite buying a NOC fuel tap and a similar product I found on ebay both started weeping within a few days because the cork seal isn't man enough for the job - and yes I have tried replacing the cork seal! Can anyone recommend a fuel tap which fits the Navigator tank, doesn't rely on a cork seal and doesn't leak - preferably with a reserve setting?

Hi Nick, I have always use…
Hi Nick,
I have always used an EP80/90 oil in the gearbox but it is now hard to get- presumably you bought online as local Motor Factors don't normally stock old EP90 any more. The modern transmission 80/90 oil is a GL5 which is a superior top class EP lubricant (contains moly) but it reputedly can damage bronze bushes. There is huge debate about this though - some fairly reliable sources say that current GL5 will not harm bronze/copper but others say only GL4 should be used.
Just to confuse the matter further I bought some GL4/GL5 -mineral based- from a local motor factor for use in the MGB diff. which they say should be the best of both worlds but they can't guarantee this.
Does anyone know for certain?
On the subject of fuel taps leaking I have found that taps often leak when the seals are dry but after a few minutes (leaking profusely) when you put in petrol they then seal themselves as the cork seal expands. This happens each year when fuel is first put in the tank after being dry all winter. If you try this route be very careful as petrol leaking is very dangerous !!.

You should never let the corks in that type of fuel tap dry out, or they will leak. If you need to drain the tank, take the fuel taps off and put them in a jam jar of petrol to keep them wet.

Thanks for the feed back chaps, following questions / feed back:
Gordon, I use Hitchcocks as a good source of quality spares - have you tried the Bullet fuel tap and does it fit the Lightweight tank?
Ian, I agree about not letting the cork dry out but after several weeks of regular use both the NOC tap and the one of Ebay were still weeping round the plunger and past the tap to the carb both open and closed - I am using 97 octane petrol but I don't think that can be the problem I think it is just poor quality cork seals.
Patrick, I am lucky enough to have a classic car dealer called Vintage and Sportscar Services near Chard in Somerset who stocks Castrol Classic EP90 GL4. All the feedback I have read on this and other forums plus this specialist say that GL4 is perfectly safe with our bushes and I have been using it in my Vitesse for 25 years and it has given no problem with the gearbox and overdrive.

Hi Nick, Chard must be clo…
Hi Nick,
Chard must be close to 1000 miles away from me if I use the Belfast to Cairnryan ferry crossing - so a pleasant jaunt on a Jubilee on a Summer evening to pick up a litre of oil ! Your Vitesse is doing well as the gearbox was always the weak point on them; I had a GT6 back in 1969 and the gearbox was regularly out to fit new bearings. But I had the 2.5 injected engine and I was only 27 then.
Some race specialists seem to say that GL5 could be used with advantage in differentials but not in most old gearboxes. The reason was because GL5 caused major trouble with the synchromesh cones in the gearboxes and they said that actual damage to bronze bushes in the box and diff was effectively non-existent. It has something to do with sulphur in the moly and pressure loadings. They say that GL5 noticeably improves performance by putting more power down on the road and it does this exceedingly smoothly.
Now the Norton box hasn't got any synchromesh so I wondered if it could be used ?.
Maybe it could transform the lightweight box into a silky smooth item but there is that bronze layshaft bush we all know about.

Hi Patrick, that would be…
Hi Patrick, that would be a good run out for the dear old Jubilee! I've read so much contradictory stuff about hypoid oils and phosphor bronze bushes and the pros and cons of GL4 and GL5. As I understand it they both have the sulphur from the molybdenum disulphide content but the amount in GL4 is much lower than GL5 so safe for older gearboxes and diffs both for the synchro hubs and bushes. As for the Vitesse I am on my 3rd gearbox in 35,000 miles and that is with an almost standard Mk2 2000cc engine - the only mod is a stage 2 cam. The current box and overdrive are from Fitchetts who I have always rated highly and they have lasted far better than the first two and remain quiet and smooth.....on a diet of Castrol classic EP90 GL4! I just wish the overdrive was less fragile - I have got the electrics reliable but when hot it tends to slip under heavy acceleration in overdrive but is fine in 4th. As for lightweight layshaft bushes - deep joy!

I recently rechecked with Glacier Industrial Bearings ref GL4/5 and bronze bushes, the advice has not changed. The oil temp has to be higher than 100C and the additive be sulphur based before it starts being a problem. If your gearbox oil is over 100C you have more pressing problems than the oil.

Hi Nick. I had the same pr…
Hi Nick. I had the same problems with a weeping fuel tap when closed.Went through the same proccess. Solved it by leaving the fuel tap on and fitted an inline fuel tap,no more problems except no reserve so monitored fuel consumption for 1000miles. Average 71 miles per gallon (15miles/ltr 25km/litre) ( even drifting swiftly past the lorries in the slow lane. under all conditions. So a full tank(3 1/2 gallon?). of fuel goes 240miles? I have used EP90 for a long time. The good thing about that is when investigating oil drops the smell of EP90 identifies it from the gearbox.

Hi Nick
Im only a few miles from you just the other side of Stockland, Iâm still building my Nav but the jubilee is running (ish!).
JEK in Chard like their classic bikes too, and JEK fabrications make some stunning exhausts.

The Hitchcocks petrol tap comes with a BSP adaptor (as in customers who bought this tap also bought this adaptor). I presume the lightweight tank is BSP.

Thanks for all the feedback chaps, I've ordered a tap from Hitchcocks Gordon with a reserve which also looks the part - I will report back how I get on! I like the in line tap work around Graham, sadly it wont work for me because my taps all weep round the plunger just enough to be noticeable.
I've had a look at JEK's web site Dan, very impressive and worth knowing about! Glad to hear the Jubilee is on the road - I had one of the last 100 made back in the late 70s with the later gearbox, better forks and chrome mud guards in the dark metallic red which was a cracking little bike. Sadly it was stolen and never recovered - YOE 720F if my memory serves me right! Good luck with the Navigator - I am seriously impressed with mine despite it's little foibles and unrestored patina! I'm rather busy work wise at the moment but lets meet up on the bikes for a chat over a pint in the near future.

Hitchcock's Enfield supplies list a petrol tap for their Indian Bullets which has a reserve. Non authentic looks but so what?
