Cam chain tensioner

Forums

I'm a new member and this is my first post on this forum so apologies if this is in the wrong section. After being in pieces in boxes for the last 30 years I am finally getting round to re-building my '63 650SS. After vapour blasting the crankcases I discovered that one of the cam chain tensioner mounting stud holes was stripped and needs helicoiling. A 5/16" BSW tap seems to fit the existing hole but on looking on the RGM site, for a new stud they give the thread sizes as 7/16" BSC/1/2" BSW. It is very difficult to find stud size information anywhere; nothing in the Haynes manual or original Owners manual. I thought that most of the crankcase threads were Whitworth on a bike of this age but I do not want to insert the wrong type of helicoil. Can anyone confirm what size insert I should be using?  Thanks

Phil has kindly sent me information on heavy twin threads and it gives the studs as having 5/16x18tpi whit into the case and 5/16 cycle for the tensioner  with reduced hex nuts .

Many thanks. Do you know where I can access the info that you have? I am sure that as I progress with the rebuild I will come across similar issues and even with a thread gauge it can be difficult to be sure.

The Dominator Technical Directory is worth checking out.  It can be found somewhere within this NOC  WebSite.  It contains an early and fairly basic version of Chapter 38 - Dominator Nuts, Bolts & Studs from the Dominator Service Notes update.

Pffft- hardly enough time to get a little dust on the top. Last summer I began the reassembly of my Electra, bought as a job lot of 2+ bikes (one long since flogged off) when I originally lived in London. I moved to Northampton in 1975......and I'm guessing Andy Sochanik can trump that.....
