Following Dale Middlehurst's article on replacing cam bushes, I have, after checking everything else, concluded that cam bushes are the problem. I have now covered just over 2,000 miles on this bike and that dreadful knocking noise has been there all the time while the engine has run faultlessly with excellent performance and fuel economy. I bought the engine as rebuilt.
I intend to have the engine out at the end of the riding season but my question is: Am I likely to do any damage or suffer a failure in the next 1,000 miles / few months?
The noise to date has not got any worse.
Could it B?

Thanks Alan, I had first…
Thanks Alan,
I had first thought followers until I read Dale's piece.
The oil is changed at very regular intervals and on std bore. (Perhaps resleeved)
Thanks for the reassurance of no further damage. Will remove the barrels in October and hopefully find a repair.

Could your problem be the cam followers tunnels in the barrel? I had them wear when I missed an oil change. I had a light weight tapping for many miles. Sold barrels to another Norton Owner!!
No problem with further damage.
I would have thought cam bushes worn would rumble?
