I am planning to get my Atlas rear mudguard re-chromed and am wondering about the Dzus spring. Were the springs originally riveted to the mudguard before or after plating? My mudguard was re-chromed (badly) before I got the bike with the spring fitted. One rivet head is still intact, the other has been polished flush and plated over. I was considering replacing the spring anyway, because it never really held the fastener very well, so now is the time to do it.
Any thoughts?

I think after plating
The springs on mine are not high polished chrome so I think that the dzus springs were fitted after plating.
If they were there they would have torn up the polishing mops.

Andy,
On my Mercury, with a stainless steel mudguard, I've used small machine screws and nuts to hold the spring in place. This seems to work well enough.
As the Dzus fastener didn't grip the seat bracket securely (it was too long), I put a rubber grommet under the head so that it squeezes as it tightens and stops it falling out.
