Question, I have the scrolled spindles….if the flat is facing outward would that cause over oiling of the head? can you use Commando spindles ie no scrolling
Reason for asking is I’ve just rebuilt the head and have fixed the scrolled spindles flat facing out…when I’ve now read they should face in, when the engine is hot I get some blue exhaust smoke….so I’m thinking I’m flooding the head somehow?
Head is fed from the timing case outlet ….hope you can shed some light on this please?
If you use big-end pressure…

If you use big-end pressure from the rear of the timing cover to lubricate the valve gear the documents say that you must use plain rocker spindles. Chris, you don't say what year Atlas engine you have but ordinarily scrolled rocker spindles are normally the ones that go with the wider (early) rockers (1 1/2 inch). With the scrolled spindles the flats should face each other. In later years the rockers were shortened to permit a thicker outer mounting boss in the head to stop wear. Commando rockers etc followed the late Atlas dimensions. The rocker oil feed for bikes with the scroller spindles is usually from a union at the bottom of the oil tank return. From 1965/6 at engine number 114870 the narrow (1 1/4 inch) rockers were introduced still using the scrolled spindles. Then at engine number 116372 when the big-end pressure was used to feed the valve gear the plain spindles were introduced (among a lot of lubrication mods) . With the plain spindles it is usual to have the inlets facing rearwards and exhausts facing forwards. Good luck, Howard
