I refitted the rear wheel on my Atlas in the correct way with the spacer between the swinging arm and the speedo gearbox but when I tighten the right side wheel spindle nut it crimps the speedo gearbox and the wheel ends up being tight also. It wasn't like that before. I've made sure the notches are slotted in correctly.
What am I missing?

If the speedo drive unit has…
If the speedo drive unit has been badly aligned or fitted without the top hat spacer and the axle tightened then it’s usual for the alloy drive unit body to get “dished” and then it will foul the hub cover even when fitted with the correct spacers . As it’s a cast alloy it will not easily be corrected and a new one with the correct type top hat spacer will be needed . Many of the replacement drives advertised are not suitable for a Norton.

Speedo problem update
I spoke to Phil Woods who put me right on the problems I was having with the speedo on my bike even with a new cable and gearbox installed. It turned out that the cable fitment at the top was incorrect. The inner cable wasn't going in far enough. Tapping the outer part down a bit sorted it out. Now the speedo works and there's no flicker at all. It's very stable and I'd say fairly accurate.
Nice one Phil!

Hi Graham
Is the small Top Hat Spacer still in the speedo drive?
Perhaps it got lost when you removed the wheel. If you cannot find it and have to order one be careful there are slight differences between spacers / machine models
