Would there be a replacement gear on the market for the mechanical auto-advance when converting to electronic ignition?

Not sure of part number, but RGM and Norvil sell them, probably others too. (Norvil do some sort of exchange system, RGM part 1269A at £24.95)

Just watch out for parallel vs straight bore - magneto's have a taper shaft while some 'Mercury' style ignition units can be straight.

All magnetos have a tapered shaft (11deg). The Mercury and late Atlas and early Commando had coil ignition therefore the housing for points and later Electronic ignition had a parallel shaft. As did the Dominators with the 18D2 dizzy.

In the 70s there was also a Magneto Replacement unit from Mistral Engineering using the Lucas RITA, as this was a Magneto Replacement it had a tapered shaft which would of course have to be fitted up with a sprocket as above WITHOUT mechanical auto advance. (the advance being done in the RITA) this sprocket would be as used for a mechanical advance magneto.                      PS The Magneto Replacement is no longer available, BUT the Lucas RITA ignition is still very much a viable item, I can repair. I also have a quantity of drive shafts for these units which of course have the magneto taper (and Whit thread) on them.

Be very wary of what the electronic conversion kit contains. For a Magneto replacement, some come with a taper shaft which means, as mentioned, above purchasing a plain sprocket to fit. Or....welding up the old Advance/Retard Unit. Other kits come with a parallel shaft presumably for a coil/distributor replacement .

Some of the very cheap conversion kits require the A/R to be kept. Not too sure how this works with a 18D2 or 1967 on coil systems.
